Before You Start
Make sure the wood is clean, dry and free from dirt, dust & grease. Choose a dry day, above 10°C, when it’s not likely to rain.
Prep - Bare Wood
Start by lightly sanding your wood to give it an even finish. Use 120grit sandpaper and sand in the direction of the woodgrain. Remember to wear a face mask. When the dust has settled, give the area a wipe with white spirit. Fill any holes or cracks with our Multi Purpose Wood Filler. Cover any knots with a knotting solution, to stop them showing through the paint.
Prep - Previously Painted Wood
If your old paint is in good condition give it a light sand with 240grit sandpaper. When the dust has settled, give the area a wipe with white spirit. If your paint is flaking or cracked you’ll need to sand it back to bare wood. The easiest way to do this is with an electric sander. Use 120grit sandpaper and sand in the direction of the woodgrain. It creates a lot of dust, so make sure you wear a face mask. When the dust has settled, give the area a wipe with white spirit. Fill any holes or cracks with our Multi Purpose Wood Filler. For holes and cracks bigger than 5mm use our High Performance Wood Filler. (Be careful preparing any wood that was painted before 1960, as they may be coated with lead paint. Using our 10 Year Weatherproof Wood Paint
Give the paint a really good stir. Then paint it on with a synthetic brush, in the direction of the woodgrain. Leave it to dry for 4 hours, then put your 2nd coat on. If you’re painting bare wood and you can still see the woodgrain after 2 coats, you’ll need to put a 3rd coat on. Your last coat will be weatherproof in just 1 hour. That’s it, job done!
Usage Areas: All smooth outdoor wood. Don't use on rough sawn fences and sheds.
Compatibility: New or previously painted wood.
Clean Up: Clean all brushes using warm, soapy water.
To keep your wood looking its best, every year, check for any imperfections. If you notice any cracks, blisters or scratches sand off any loose bits. Touch up the area with 2 coats of 10 year Weatherproof Primer & Paint, following the instructions above.
