An important announcement from our marketing director about our 'Does Exactly What It Says' strapline.
Recently we teamed up with Channel 4 to bring you #RonsealTheWeekend. An exciting advertising campaign designed to help the nation to have their best bank holiday weekend ever.
We were expecting great things from the partnership. We were wrong!
#RonsealTheWeekend was made a complete mockery of by Channel 4. All we wanted to do was encourage millions of Channel 4 viewers to get off their backsides and get on with their DIY instead. But this didn’t sit well with Channel 4; they’d much rather have their viewers 'veg out' on their sofas and watch the telly.
Sadly, this resulted in an hour long on-air battle, throughout their hit Friday night show Gogglebox, with the voice of Ronseal and the Channel 4 announcer eventually coming to blows. The cost of repairs to equipment is still being argued about.
Channel 4 became so frustrated, they did something that was totally unnecessary and honestly, a bit below the belt...they pushed over our tub of Ronseal One Coat Fence Life with one of their iconic wooden blocks.
Needless to say, we were all completely shocked by this act of pettiness.
Finally they took our ads off air.
All we wanted from this new advertising campaign was to encourage people to do their DIY with our home or garden products instead of wasting their weekend in front of the telly. Something that’s easy enough when all of our range 'Does Exactly What It Says On The Tin'.
What’s so wrong with that?
It’s just a great shame Channel 4 never shared our vision of every fence in the UK being beautifully protected from the elements.
Thanks for your continued support at this time, Team Ronseal.
Last Friday we ran an apology. It explained that, after 21 years, we were ending the use of our famous ‘does exactly what it says on the tin’ line. We want to apologise for that apology and say, that we are now even sorrier than we were.
