Where to use it?

Any rotten interior or exterior wood

Use on...

Before you start
  • Wear protective gloves and eye protection. The hardener is highly flammable, so keep it away from flames, sparks and heaters, and open doors and windows for ventilation.
  • Find the full extent of the rot by pushing a screwdriver or bradawl into the wood. Rotten wood will feel soft and spongy.
  • Cut or scrape away any loose, crumbling wood until you reach a fairly sound base.
  • Strip any paint or varnish from the repair area around it, so the hardener can soak in.
  • Make sure the wood is dry. Hardener won’t penetrate wet timber properly.
  • For deeper repairs, drill small holes into the soft wood so the hardener can reach further in.

Application
  1. Give the tin a thorough shake.
  2. Pour some of the hardener out into the plastic lid.
  3. Brush it on generously. Keep applying until the rotten wood stops absorbing it, and fill any drilled holes.
  4. Leave it to dry for two hours.
  5. Scrub with a wire brush to get rid of any excess hardener.
After it's dry
  • Fill holes and cracks with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler.
  • Once the filler has set, sand smooth and paint or stain as normal.
  • Clean your tools with white spirit straight away.
  • Don’t pour leftover hardener down drains or into watercourses.

Can I use a wood filler on Rotten Wood?

Yes. If you've got rotten wood, just scrape out the really rotten bits. Then use our Wet Rot Wood Hardener. Once this has made your wood hard again it's ready for fixing with our High Performance Wood Filler.
