How to use Perfect Finish Ultimate Protection Decking Stain

Before you start

Clear your decking of furniture and give it a good clean to remove dirt, grime, algae and leaves.

Our stain works best on dry days when the temperature is above 10°C

How to prepare decking for staining

Untreated, grey and weathered decks

  1. Use decking restorer to bring out the natural colour of your old decking. This will restore the natural look of your wood and provide a base for the stain to stick.
  2. Follow the instructions on the tin to make sure you do the best job.
  3. Leave you decking to completely dry before you apply the stain.

New decking

  1. Most new decking is made with a little bit of waterproofing protection which could stop the stain sticking. So you need to get rid of this.
  2. Leave your deck to weather for around six months.
  3. Clean it with cleaner and reviver and let it dry.
  4. Throw water on the surface and if you notice beading, keep cleaning until it stops.

Previously painted decks

  1. Remove all old finishes including flaking paint with decking stripper.
  2. Follow the instructions on the tin to ensure you do a proper job.
  3. Let the decking completely dry.

  1. Lay down some paper before you remove the pad from the tub as it might have some stain on the bottom of it.
  2. Follow the instructions showing you how to assemble to poles – you don’t want the poles to fall apart halfway through staining!
  3. Thoroughly stir your stain the make sure all the pigments are mixed together.
  4. Test the colour on a small patch of decking to make sure you’re happy with it.
  5. Start in the furthest corned and pull or push the pad in long strokes down the length of the board. Focus on three or four at a time to prevent overlap marks.
  6. Once you’ve applied the first coat, wait four hours for it to dry.
  7. Apply the second coat.
  8. After 24 hours, your stain will be completely hard. Now you can move your furniture back on your deck.

To keep you deck looking its best for longer, regularly clean it remove leaves, grime, dirt, moss and algae.

If you notice a build-up of dirt or sports of mould, simply treat them with a cleaner to remove it before it becomes a serious problem.

Regular cleaning will also help with maintenance and should, hopefully, prevent damage.

But if you do notice patches of damage, they can be easily repaired. Just use a piece of sandpaper to smooth of the affected area and then apply a thin coat of the stain. Once dry, it will look good as new!
