How to use Perfect Finish Ultimate Protection Decking Oil

Before you start

Pick a day that’s good for DIY: dry and above 10°C.

How to prepare decking for oiling

New decks

  1. It’s best to leave brand new decking alone for six months before you oil it. This give time to let the pre-treatment naturally wash away and provides a smooth surface to apply your oil.
  2. Once you’ve waited six months, use a decking cleaner and tough brush to scrub down the surface. This will ensure that all the pre-treatment has been removed and you have a smooth surface that the oil will best stick to.

Previously painted decks

  1. You will need to remove the old finish from your decking before you can oil it. To do that, use decking stripper and follow the instructions.

Once you’ve stripped it, allow your deck to completely dry out before you begin oiling it.

  1. Put some paper down before you take the tray out of the tub as there may be some oil on the bottom of it.
  2. Follow the instructions to assemble the pole – you don’t want it to fall apart halfway through oiling!
  3. Thoroughly stir the oil and dip the pad in the tub. Test a small patch of the deck to make sure your happy with the colour.
  4. Start in the farthest corner of your deck and push or pull the pad in long strokes down the length of the boards. Work on three to four boards at a time to avoid overlap marks.
  5. Wait four hours for the first coat to dry.

Apply a second coat. After 24 hours, the second coat will be completely hard and your deck will be ready to use again.

Regularly cleaning your deck will help keep it looking tip top and will keep your decking protected better for longer.

So on a regular basis give your decking a good clean and scrub to remove build ups of dirt, grime, leaves, algae and mildew.

You should also periodically deep clean your deck with special decking cleaner.

The oil is tough but over time you might still notice patches that look tired and worn. Fortunately, it’s really easy to repair them. Just lightly sand the damaged area and apply a thin coat of decking oil. Leave it to dry and that’s job done.
